“I like to take cash only!”

So how do you deal with the One in £20 of £1 coins is fake? Now handling forged notes & coins is becoming a much bigger worry for all businesses. Royal Mint figures released in September 2009 suggested that 2 per cent of the coins - around 30 million in total - were fakes, but in January 2010 that figure was increased to 2.5 per cent.

But Andy Brown, managing director at Willings, a company which tests coins collected at car parks and in vending machines, said the machines used by the Royal Mint to test for fakes were not accurate enough. The situation has worsened since 2009, when one in 40 £1 coins were fake. Experts and MPs said the level of fakes were so high there was now a serious risk that consumer confidence in Britain's most popular coin was becoming compromised.

However, other countries have been forced to take similar action when counterfeits became too prevalent. The five-rand coin in 2004 was reissued after taxi-drivers and shopkeepers in South Africa started to refuse to accept them. Fakes were reportedly just 2% of all coins, compared with 2.81% with the British £1.

Cheque guarantee cards being phased out June 2011

With the cheque guarantee cards being phased out this year and the suggestion that cheque's will disappear by 2018 everything is pointing toward a cash-less society. There is also a new trend of cash cards which people can load with their wages and spend them where merchant machines are available.

E-Commerce

The world has changed with the arrival of the Internet, providing people and businesses the opportunity to purchase goods and services from their own computer.

E-commerce is growing strongly with over 60% of all adults making purchases on the Internet in the UK. Internet shopping accounts now for over 10% of all retail sales in the UK and it is expected to grow to 20% by 2010.

Over 100,000 UK businesses already take online payments and more and more businesses are recognising the need to do likewise. By having the ability to accept on-line sales you will benefit from the ability to reach a wider target audience and significantly increase your turnover.

To accept payments on-line your website will require a shopping cart and secure gateway. You will then require an Internet Merchant Account (also know as an Internet MID) and a Payment Service Provider.

Bluecygnet are experts in finding you the best deal for these services, with our market leading rates and our partnership with one of the leading UK independent providers of secure on-line payments. Contact us to find out more.

Mobile Solutions

In many businesses such as restaurants, hotels, trade shows, fast food delivery and mobile services such as plumbers, locksmiths and electricians a business needs to be able to take secure Chip and Pin payments at the point of sale. This allows for peace of mind for the customer and security for the merchant, together with savings in time and efficiency by not having to fulfil a Cardholder Not Present transaction at a later date.

Customer research has shown that over 80% of restaurant customers prefer payment at their table, instead of having to queue at the checkout. A business attending a Trade or Business Show can take a mobile terminal with them and not have to worry about expensive phone lines on their stand, and Bluecygnet can arrange long or short term contracts (minimum one month), depending on your requirements.
